Ethical Issues: Although artificial organs in regenerative medicine are seen as beneficial by scientists, there are some ethical issues people have towards this type of medicine. Based on an individual’s religious beliefs they might not entirely agree with or believe in this type of science. Some people do not tolerate the idea of stem cell research especially on embryos or inserting embryonic stem cells into artificial tissues and organs. This is one of the main ethical issues because the embryo is demolished to obtain the cells within. Issues with regenerative medicine also include the boundaries between actual therapies and enhancements. There are those who believe that regenerative medicine is changing humanity too much with enhancements and forgetting the actual point of repairing the tissues and organs. These are some of the many ethical issues associated with this new, growing medicine.[15]  |
Legal issues: The new field of regenerative medicine poses challenges for the FDA. Rigorous amounts of testing needs to be done to ensure safety in all products used. For the Food and Drug Administration to make its approval, expectations for product safety and quality of the clinical evidence need to be met. FDA approval can be slowed down by delayed discussions until most of the product and clinical development plan has been established. On the contrary, it can be enhanced if the FDA is involved in these two aspects. It is also important that FDA is involved in regenerative medicine research, so that they can put in feedback and input while learning more about it, which can also lead to a faster approval.[13] |
